The Charleston Hockey Over-35 League summer season couldn’t have scripted a more electric finish.
For the second consecutive season, WorldVest and the Dire Wolves found themselves across the ice from one another with a championship on the line. The matchup was familiar. The result was familiar. The path to get there, however, was anything but.
WorldVest entered the championship as the reigning titleholders after absolutely dismantling the Dire Wolves in their previous finals meeting. That game ended in a decisive 7–1 WorldVest victory, leaving little doubt about who owned the league crown.
This time around, the Dire Wolves came ready for a fight.
Deadlocked After Regulation
From the opening puck drop, it was clear this wouldn’t be another runaway. The game was tighter, more physical and far more competitive, with both teams battling through a defensive championship matchup worthy of the occasion. Goals were at a premium, neither side could create any meaningful separation, and after regulation the scoreboard remained deadlocked at 1–1.
After an entire summer season, the Over-35 championship ultimately came down to the most dramatic scenario possible:
Overtime. Next goal wins.
The Goal Everyone Will Be Talking About
And then came the goal everyone will be talking about.
WorldVest found the back of the net in overtime to secure a 2–1 championship victory, setting off a not-so-immediate celebration on one side of the ice — and plenty of questions on the other.
Was it a clean deflection?
Did the puck redirect legally into the net?
Or, as some in the building saw it, was there a distinct pushing motion with the hand that helped send the puck across the goal line?
Depending on which bench you ask, you may get a very different answer.
But hockey has always had one rule that ultimately matters most: the call on the ice stands.
The goal was good according to the refs.
The final score was 2–1 WorldVest.
And WorldVest was champion once again.
The Repeat
Controversy aside, the result puts an exclamation point on another outstanding season for a WorldVest squad that has established itself as the team to beat in Charleston’s Over-35 division. Winning one championship is difficult. Coming back and doing it again — against the same opponent, in a dramatically tighter game, with everything hanging in the balance in overtime — is something else entirely.
And for Captain Danny Tanton, lifting the hardware is becoming familiar territory.
Tanton once again captained WorldVest through the season and all the way to the championship, completing the repeat and officially giving his squad back-to-back Over-35 titles.
So Close for the Dire Wolves
For the Dire Wolves, it’s another runner-up finish, but this championship looked nothing like the 7–1 defeat that preceded it. This time they pushed the reigning champions to the absolute limit. From a six-goal blowout in their previous finals meeting to a 2–1 overtime nail-biter, the Dire Wolves came within a single bounce — or, depending on your interpretation, a single controversial deflection — of flipping the result.
That’s hockey.
A full summer season. Two familiar finalists. A 1–1 deadlock after regulation. One championship. And ultimately, one overtime goal separating them.
What an end to the season. What a finish to the game.
The debate over the winning goal may continue well into next season, but the trophy won’t be going anywhere.
Final: WorldVest 2, Dire Wolves 1 (OT).
WorldVest is once again the Charleston Hockey Over-35 League champion. Back-to-back.
